The Travis County 4H Capital Blast off Aerospace Camp has been an AARG outreach project since 1998. The camp is a week long event that takes approximately 90 kids through a variety of technology related activities, such as building solar powered boats and cars, flying model rockets and water rockets, studying astronomy, and learning how GPS systems work and how to use them. The campers are predominately 9-12 years of age.
In 2003 the camp schedule was changed to eliminate the NASA trip, allowing more time for other camp activities. Steve Rogers and Shawn McCoy spent the week helping with the rocketry portion of the camp. Thanks to Shawn's efforts, 12 computers were available to create a computer lab to introduce the kids to Wrasp and VCP. The younger campers built rockets like the Quest Astra and Custom Freedom, while the older campers built more complex rockets like the Estes Loadstar. This year, we introduced the idea of scratch building flying saucers from styrofoam cups, plates, and other simple shapes. We also used the Edmond's Tinee glider as a fill-in activity for the kids who finish their rockets quickly.
