NAR Austin Section

Minutes of the Second Planning Meeting

I'd like to express my gratitude to all those who have contributed time, ideas and/or effort to the formation of an NAR section in Austin. There has been a gratifying outpouring of support for this effort from NAR members and non-NAR members alike.

On August 7, 1998, the second section steering committee meeting was held in the IHOP on 183 at Ohlen Road in Austin, Texas. In attendance were:

  • Louis Catozzi
  • James Duffy
  • Lee James
  • Tom Kindel
  • Alex Mericas
  • Steven Rogers

We had an enjoyable time discussing cooperation between model and high power rocketeers and organizations. Three folks from the first meeting were joined by three other rocketeers from the rocketry-austin list. The following announced their desire to serve as Section Officers:

  • Alex Mericas - President
  • James Duffy - Secretary/Treasurer
  • Lee James - Senior Advisor

We still need someone to announce their willingness to server as vice-president. Please give some thought to serving in any of the Section Offices. If you are interested in serving, please announce your interest in the rocketry-austin list or by contacting Lee James at 707-9116. If you know someone whom you think would make a good Section Officer, please encourage them to make an announcement. For a complete discussion of the duties of the Section Officers, see the Proposed Bylaws on the temporary web site at http://www.ccsi.com/~srogers/NAR

We discussed the proposed bylaws in detail, article by article. This resulted in a complete restructuring of the Section Offices. An copy of the resulting document dated August 7, 1998, will be available on the temporary web site this weekend. Please take the time to read it carefully. Post any suggestions for improvement or corrections on the rocketry-austin list or send them directly to Lee James.

So far eight current NAR members have committed to attending the August 15 meeting (see details on the temporary web site). The bylaws are done except for possible minor changes. All that remains is to find a candidate for Vice-president and select a name. Please feel free to make suggestions for both of these on the rocketry-austin list. Check with your prospective VP before announcing for them but fee free to brainstorm on a section name. Remember, it does NOT HAVE TO BE AN ACRONYM! The section name does not need to rhyme. It should be descriptive of who we are. It should be as free of negative connotations as is possible in an English speaking society. ;-)

We decided to conduct all further discussion on the web. Please feel free to jump in a speak up. We need to get as much done before the meeting on the 15th as possible.

Again, thanks to all those who have contributed. It's coming together. Momentum is gathering and excitement is building! I hope to see you at the meeting on the 15th! (see the web site for details)
